Good night Wire...
The final episode of The Wire airs this evening. I am sad to see it go. It is one of the best television series ever broadcast. I find myself thinking each week, "NO! Don't stop! I want more!" This season seems much shorter than seasons past, but maybe it's just because so much is happening. All of the different pieces are coming together. All of the thugs that have escaped harm in the past are getting payback. McNulty's narcissism is finally doing him in and taking Freeman with him. Bubbles has risen from the dark hole he once occupied and seems to be better off for it.
Watching this season has made me want to go back and watch the whole thing over again. It is that kind of series. There are nuances and subtleties that I miss, week to week. My Sunday evening are not going to be the same.
As Kima says to her sleepless son at the end of a recent episode while they sit in the window of her apartment:
Good night, moon. Good night, popos. Good night, fiends. Good night, hoppers. Good night, hustlers. Good night, scammers. Good night to everybody. Good night to one and all.
